STARTING FROM SQUARE ONE: ADVICE FOR EXERCISE BEGINNERS

STARTING FROM SQUARE ONE: ADVICE FOR EXERCISE BEGINNERS

We are frequently asked what someone should do if they haven’t exercised in a long time. It can be easy to fall into a busy schedule that doesn’t make time for the most important person in your life—you! But that doesn’t mean that it’s okay to neglect physical fitness. The good news is, when we are asked this question, it’s a signal that a person is ready to get moving again and make exercise a part of their routine.

If you haven’t exercised in a long time or feel like you’ve never really been in shape, don’t worry. We can dispel a lot of myths and give you some good advice for how to get started on increasing your strength, endurance, and health!

ADVICE FOR GETTING STARTED

Talk to Your Doctor

If you’re new to working out, haven’t exercised in a long time, have risk factors, or really want to change anything about your habits, it’s a great idea to talk to your physician first. He or she will give you an idea of how to do it safely, what some realistic goals are, and may even have insight into valuable resources that are available to you (like referrals for other services, or benefits of your medical coverage).

Find a Fitness Center

Very few people would be able to put together a home gym with an array of equipment that rivals what you can get at a fitness center. Joining a gym like Club Metro means that you gain access to all kinds of tools, experts, resources, and an entire community to support you in your fitness goals.

Talk to a Trainer

After talking to a doctor, talking to a physical trainer is the next step toward getting the right people in your corner. A trainer works with you without judgement. They aren’t going to lecture you or look down on you for the choices you’ve made up to today. Their job is to meet you where you are and help you take that next step safely and confidently. Don’t be embarrassed about talking to a trainer! They don’t only work with people who are already fit. The majority of trainers work with everyday people who want professional guidance to work out efficiently and intelligently.

Join a Class

Joining a group fitness class works on so many levels. It’s fun. It’s a scheduled time when you can plan on (and look forward to) spending time on yourself. You’ll push yourself harder in a group, either because you want to keep going due to the group’s energy or because you’re having a good time so you don’t even realize you’re working harder than you would on your own. Plus, it’s a good way to make friends with other exercise fans.

Gear Up!

Having a coordinated gym outfit, bag, water bottle, and so on will not make you get fit faster, but it does help your new routine when you have the tools you need. Whether it’s a flattering outfit, the right shoes, or a water bottle that stays nice and cold, make sure you’ve got what you need to get started on the right foot.
